Local Groups

New York Residents Against Drilling (NYRAD) - that's us! We are a grassroots network of local residents who are concerned about unconventional gas development in New York State. You will find the complete NYRAD mission statement here, on the About NYRAD page.

Binghamton Regional Sustainability Coalition (BRSC) - Southern Tier grassroots group whose primary focus is promoting new and existing sustainability efforts. Its Natural Gas Task Force has presented several well-attended gas production education events, including an appearance by Mayor Calvin Tillman of Dish, Texas. NYRAD had its beginning as the Residents Coalition under BRSC auspices.

Gas Drilling Awareness for Cortland County (GDACC) - a group of residents who are concerned about gas drilling. They say: "Our goal is to educate ourselves and the community about gas drilling, and to promote a safe and clean environment."

Shaleshock - Ithaca-based Shaleshock is an alliance of Working Groups which include people who have signed leases, not signed leases, who have been compulsorily integrated, and people who don’t own land that is working to protect our communities and environment from exploitative gas drilling in the Marcellus Shale region.

The Committee to Preserve the Finger Lakes - committed to preserving the natural beauty and the purity of the water in the Finger Lakes region of New York State.

un-naturalgas.org (CDOG) - Chenango Delaware Otsego Gas Drilling Opposition Group is a representative organization whose mission is to: 1) create , assist, and coordinate action groups in the region; 2) assemble and disseminate information to defend our families, land, and resources from potential harm; 3) critique agencies, leasing agents, and officeholders who downplay or obscure the dangers of gas drilling; 4) help local governments strengthen and assert their power to protect their communities.

Discussion Groups

For those interested, there are several moderated listservs devoted to information (primarily news articles) and discussion on the Marcellus gas drilling issue. You will need a google account to access these groups via the web.

Otsego 2000 - Otsego 2000 is a not-for-profit organization founded in 1981 to protect the environmental, scenic, cultural and historic resources of the Otsego Lake region and northern Otsego County. Otsego 2000 feels strongly that the draft New York DEC regulations governing horizontal hydraulic fracturing of natural gas wells in Otsego County and elsewhere in New York pose unacceptable risks to our water, environment, agriculture, and infrastructure.
